Resident Evil Reboot Tops $100M Domestically, Sets Franchise Record

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil has earned over $100 million domestically after just two weekends in theaters, according to GameSpot. The film has set a new franchise record for domestic box office, surpassing the previous high of $60 million held by Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Globally, the movie has grossed $196.5 million against a reported $75 million production budget. That worldwide total puts it well behind Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which remains the franchise's highest-grossing film worldwide at $312 million.

The reboot marks a sharp turnaround for the series. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was the worst-performing theatrical entry domestically, earning just $17 million. After that disappointment, Constantin Film put the franchise on hiatus until Cregger pitched his idea.

Paul W.S. Anderson directed six Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich, which collectively earned over $1 billion worldwide. Cregger has expressed having ideas for a sequel but has also said he is finished with franchise movies.
