Ridley Scott Says Western Project Freewalkers Is Still in His Pocket
The director says he would love to finally make a Western and describes Freewalkers, which was shelved in 2024, as particularly savage.
Ridley Scott has said he would love to finally make a Western, and that he has a project titled Freewalkers waiting in his back pocket, according to screenrant.com. The director described the film as particularly savage.
Plot details remain scarce, but the story reportedly follows a Native American girl infected with measles who undertakes a dangerous quest across the snowy Midwest to find a cure.
Freewalkers is not Scott's immediate priority. He is currently focused on a new adaptation of Treasure Island.
The Western has been on Scott's mind for years: he was primed to shoot Freewalkers in 2024 until that version was cancelled and pushed back. He has been trying to get a Western off the ground since his career began.
His other unrealised projects include a Bee Gees biopic he was meant to shoot a few years ago, which does not appear to be happening anymore, and a third and final Alien prequel he still wants to make. Scott was also linked to adaptations of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and S. Craig Zahler's Wraiths of the Broken Land.
Meanwhile, one long-gestating Western is moving forward without him: after years in development, The Brigands of Rattlecreek is being directed by Park Chan-wook, with Matthew McConaughey and Pedro Pascal starring. Scott previously directed the 2013 thriller The Counselor, written by McCarthy.
