Rossellini Retrospectives Set for Los Angeles and New York
The Academy Museum and Cinecittà present 'Roberto Rossellini Prefers Real Life' from November 4, with Film Forum's 25-film 'Rossellini 120' opening November 20.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Cinecittà and the Italian Ministry of Culture will present the retrospective “Roberto Rossellini Prefers Real Life” at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, opening November 4 and 5, according to IndieWire. The Academy Museum series runs through November 30, and Film Forum in New York hosts the 25-film “Rossellini 120” from November 20 through December 10.
The Academy Museum audience will see the world premiere of Cinecittà's new 4K restoration of “Fear,” from 1954. The Venice Classics premiere of the restored “Journey to Italy” will also be shown in the United States as part of the program.
Isabella Rossellini, the director's daughter, will present the films at the Academy Museum on November 4 and 5 and on the opening night of the Film Forum edition.
The program includes “Rome, Open City,” “Paisan,” “Germany, Year Zero,” Guy Maddin's “My Dad Is 100 Years Old,” and the documentaries “Viva Ingrid!” and “Rossellini Through His Own Eyes.”
Marking 120 years
The two retrospectives mark the 120th anniversary of Rossellini's birth. The director, who died in 1977, is best known for his films with his third wife, Ingrid Bergman, among them “Stromboli,” “Europe '51,” “Fear,” “Journey to Italy” and “Joan of Arc at the Stake.”
Cinecittà has held the rights to ten of Rossellini's most representative films for thirty years, and the organization and the Academy Museum have previously held joint tributes to Pier Paolo Pasolini, Ennio Morricone, Sophia Loren and Carlo Rambaldi.
