Seville Film Festival Opens With Honors for Holland, Frémaux and Cartoon Saloon

The 2026 edition opens Friday with Sébastien Laudenbach's Viva Carmen! and launches Insula, a screenplay market with 58 titles.

The Seville European Film Festival opens its 2026 edition on Friday, November 6, with Agnieszka Holland, Thierry Frémaux and the Irish studio Cartoon Saloon set to receive honors, according to Variety.

Holland, the Polish director, will take a Golden Giraldillo, while Frémaux, who heads the Cannes Film Festival, will receive a Giraldillo de Honor. Cartoon Saloon will be given a Giraldillo in a first for the festival, which has previously presented the award to individuals rather than companies.

The studio award comes as Cartoon Saloon marks its 25th anniversary. The Kilkenny-based animation house released its first feature, The Secret of Kells, in 2007.

The opening night film is Viva Carmen!, directed by Sébastien Laudenbach and led in voice by Camélia Jordana. The main competition includes Dani de la Orden's The Director, which has its world premiere at the festival with backing from Beta Fiction Spain, and Andrew Haigh's A Long Winter.

Seville is also launching Insula, a screenplay market featuring 58 titles, in partnership with Spain's ICAA film agency. Howard A. Rodman heads the festival jury.
