Sho Miyake Gets First North American Retrospective at Metrograph

The Metrograph series runs November 7–17 with eight Miyake titles and is part of a Japan Foundation tour covering 14 cities.

Sho Miyake will receive his first North American retrospective, titled "Unspoken Gestures: The Films of Sho Miyake," at New York's Metrograph from November 7 to 17, according to Variety. The program is co-organized and presented by the Japan Foundation.

The retrospective includes eight of Miyake's own titles, among them Playback (2012), The Cockpit (2014), And Your Bird Can Sing (2018), Small, Slow but Steady (2022) and All the Long Nights (2024). Miyake will attend the Metrograph opening weekend in person, with encore screenings following the main run.

The New York dates sit inside a wider Japan Foundation tour that spans 14 cities in eight countries and opens on November 3 in Washington, D.C. Miyake will join the Washington Q&A remotely and will travel to every other tour city.

In New York, Miyake has also selected two carte blanche picks, Crystal Voyager (1973) and Sad Vacation (2007), and will introduce them on November 8.

The tour continues in the new year to Paris, Toulouse, Rome, Turin, Madrid, Zurich, Cologne, London and Derby, ending in February 2027.

Earlier festival recognition

In 2025, Miyake's Two Seasons, Two Strangers won the Golden Leopard at Locarno. His debut feature, Playback, which he made while still in his mid-twenties, also premiered at Locarno.
