Rosenbaum Says Smallville Animated Sequel Script Is 'Spectacular'

Michael Rosenbaum said Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar have written a concept for an animated sequel, though no James Gunn talks have happened.

Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor on Smallville, said the series' co-creators Al Gough and Miles Millar have written something for him for an animated sequel that he called spectacular, according to screenrant.com. The project has not been greenlit, and Rosenbaum said he has not had a real conversation with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn about it.

Rosenbaum said the whole Smallville cast, including Tom Welling, who played Clark Kent, along with Gough and Millar, all want to make the animated sequel. He said he would pitch the project when the time is right, and that it could happen in as little as five years, or longer.

The concept would aim to have every character voiced by the actor who originally played the role, along with the show's Freaks of the Week. Rosenbaum said he is unsure whether Smallville fits into the current DC Studios plans alongside the new Superman films.

Older context

Smallville aired from 2001 to 2011 on The WB and The CW and is currently marking its 25th anniversary. In 2025, Gunn's DC Universe brought Superman back to the big screen with David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
