Tom Welling: Animated Smallville Sequel Awaits Warner Bros. IP Approval

Tom Welling says the animated Smallville sequel with original cast members has not been greenlit because Warner Bros. has not approved use of its IP.

Tom Welling has said the animated Smallville sequel he is developing with Michael Rosenbaum has not yet been greenlit because Warner Bros. has not given permission to use its intellectual property. Welling, who played Clark Kent in the series, gave the update in comments reported by screenrant.com.

Welling said the concept would be animated and would feature original cast members voicing their characters. He added that some early renderings from an artist exist and that a poster has been made but cannot be shared.

He described the project as an uphill battle even before the Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merger, and said he remains optimistic about its chances.

Smallville originally ran from 2001 to 2011. Welling and Erica Durance appeared in a cameo in the 2019 Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, and a Smallville Season 11 tie-in comic ran between 2012 and 2014. The series has also become available on Netflix internationally.
