Sony TV Chief: Channel 4 Can't Survive As Is
Sony Pictures Television president Wayne Garvie says Channel 4 should join the BBC's commercial arm, questioning whether in-house production can fix its model.
Sony Pictures Television president Wayne Garvie said it is "very difficult to see" how Channel 4 survives in its present form, arguing the broadcaster should become part of the BBC's commercial operations.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society London Convention, Garvie — who oversees production of series including Dept. Q and Industry — said he is skeptical that in-house production will transform Channel 4's business model.
His comments follow Channel 4's announcement of the biggest round of layoffs in its 43-year history. CEO Priya Dogra has said the company needs to own its future.
Dogra has previously downplayed the idea of merging with the BBC, saying it would result in Channel 4 being absorbed and losing its editorial voice. She said she was open to collaboration but was not clear on what this would entail.
Heather Jones, chief creative officer EMEA and general manager UK at Hearst Networks, also appeared at the convention, as reported by Deadline.
