Stallone Reworks Poe Screenplay Into Gothic Comic Book
The actor says he has rewritten his Edgar Allan Poe script as a gothic graphic novel and is looking for a collaborator, naming Frank Miller as a model.
Sylvester Stallone has rewritten his long-gestating Edgar Allan Poe screenplay as a gothic comic book over the last two weeks, according to Bleeding Cool. He discussed the project on The Rest Is Entertainment with Marina Hyde.
Stallone said he wants a creative partner for the graphic novel and named Frank Miller and Sin City as his model. He hopes the comic will be published and could later become a film again.
The Poe project has a long history. Stallone wrote a screenplay about Poe in 1971, and a surviving draft dated March 1, 1979, shows he originally planned to star as Poe himself. In 2017, he shared on Instagram the sole surviving image from costume tests for the role.
Over the decades he rewrote the script at least 20 times and later targeted Robert Downey Jr. for the lead. According to his book The Steps, directors including William Friedkin and Roman Polanski showed interest in the project, and during production of Rocky V in 1990 he visited the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site in Philadelphia.
In 2019, Bleeding Cool reported an Instagram video in which Stallone vowed to finish the script.
