New Star Trek Movie Will Not Be Set in Abrams' Kelvin Timeline

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley say their Star Trek film features no legacy characters and takes place further in the future.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the co-writers and directors of a new Star Trek movie, said their film will not be set in the Kelvin Timeline created by J.J. Abrams and will not feature legacy characters, according to an interview with Empire reported by polygon.com.

The pair said the movie is set in a different time, a little further in the future, and not in Abrams' timeline. It draws inspiration from Crimson Tide and Training Day.

According to the filmmakers, the new Star Trek movie marks the end of the Kelvin Timeline.

Abrams rebooted Star Trek for the screen in 2009, creating the Kelvin Timeline, named after a starship that encountered time-traveling Romulans. A decade after Star Trek Beyond hit theaters, that timeline is officially coming to an end.

Goldstein and Daley previously directed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. A fourth Kelvin Timeline movie was in the works for years, with one plot featuring Chris Pine's Kirk reuniting with his late father George, played by Chris Hemsworth, through time travel, but it never came to pass. Paramount tried to launch a new Trek movie, cycling through several directors before landing on Goldstein and Daley.
