A series that outgrew its origins
The Next Generation launched on Paramount in 1987 without any of the original cast. It ran 178 episodes across seven seasons and earned a Best Drama Emmy nomination, and it spawned four feature films plus the sequel series Picard, which ended in 2023. In July 2026, Stewart told TV Insider that Jean-Luc was the most significant role of his career. 2026 marks Star Trek's 60th anniversary, and The Next Generation's 40th anniversary falls next year.
