New Street Fighter Movie Uses Hand-Drawn 2D Animation for Flashbacks
Titmouse produced the animated sequences, which appear almost exclusively during flashbacks, according to Polygon.
The creators of the new Street Fighter movie revealed that a significant portion of the film is told through traditional 2D animation, produced by Los Angeles-based studio Titmouse, according to Polygon.
The animated sequences are used almost exclusively during flashbacks. The film opens with an animated sequence recounting the first World Warrior tournament, and the flashbacks depict Ken and Ryu's training under Master Gouken, played by Don Lee.
Director Kitao Sakurai said every frame of animation in the movie is hand-drawn.
The film is set in 1993, the year Capcom released Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers in arcades. Street Fighter arrives in theaters on October 16, 2026.
An earlier animated adaptation
Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie was an earlier animated adaptation of the franchise. Titmouse previously worked with Street Fighter on an animation for the franchise's collaboration with Overwatch, and recently animated the video game adaptation Golden Axe.
