Warner Bros. Clockwork Extends North American Run of 'The Devils'

The restored uncensored cut of Ken Russell's 1971 film stays in theaters after grossing over $1.7 million across 350 locations in its opening weekend.

Warner Bros. Clockwork has extended the North American theatrical run of the restored uncensored cut of Ken Russell's The Devils beyond its planned one-week engagement, citing popular demand, according to indiewire.com. The re-release opened in 350 locations and grossed over $1.7 million, a per-screen average of $4,925.

The film will play in 315 locations in its second weekend. The release marks the first wide availability of an uncensored director's cut of the film.

International dates set

BFI will release the film in the U.K. and Ireland starting October 30. Further theatrical runs are planned for Poland on October 23, France on October 28, Australia and New Zealand on October 29, Germany and Austria on October 29, and Greece and the Netherlands on November 12.

The 4K restoration used the original camera negative at WB Water Tower Color, with audio restored from the original composite 35mm mag film at WB Sound.

The Devils, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed, was released in 1971 and drew censorship over its look at religion, power and corruption, requiring alterations. The uncensored cut was reconstructed in 2004 under Ken Russell's supervision with editor Michael Bradsell, Mark Kermode and Paul Joyce. Warner Bros. Clockwork premiered the remastered version at Cannes and screened it at festivals including Il Cinema Ritrovato, the Toronto International Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, Beyond Fest, the BFI London Film Festival, Sitges Film Festival and Festival Lumière.
