The Diplomat Creator Explains Why Season 4 Kills Off Austin Dennison
Debora Cahn says the helicopter crash that removes the British official was a "terrible, terrible realization" for the writers' room.
The Diplomat has killed off Austin Dennison, with the British official dying in a helicopter crash in Season 4. Series creator Debora Cahn addressed the decision in an interview, according to comingsoon.net.
Cahn said the choice to remove the character was a "terrible, terrible realization" for the writing team, and admitted that Dennison's death "still hurts."
The same season also includes the resignation of Trowbridge, leaving Kate Wyler operating under a new British administration. Cahn said the writers deliberately introduced a new prime minister who shares Kate's personality, values and speech, yet views the United States as a source of political instability.
According to Cahn, removing Dennison was intended to force Kate to start over in a new political environment.
In earlier episodes, Kate had developed a strong working relationship with Dennison and a workable relationship with Trowbridge.
