The Mummy: The Book of the Dead Begins Production, Original Cast Returns
Radio Silence directs the sequel, scheduled for late 2027, while the 1999 original streams free on YouTube.
Production on The Mummy: The Book of the Dead began early last month, with Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah reuniting, according to Polygon. The sequel is scheduled for release in late 2027 and will be directed by Radio Silence.
The 1999 film The Mummy, which starred Fraser, Weisz and Hannah, is currently streaming for free on YouTube.
The original film, released in 1999, launched a franchise and performed well at the box office, inspiring two sequels. Critics were mixed, though Roger Ebert gave it three stars out of four.
A later Tom Cruise-led remake was intended to launch a cinematic universe but was abandoned after it bombed at the box office. In 2022, Fraser told Variety that the key ingredient of the original was fun.
More recently, Lee Cronin directed a straight horror adaptation of The Mummy, which was released before this article.
