The Odyssey Becomes Top International Film in Korean Box Office History
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey passes Avatar: The Way of Water in Korean box office history with KRW139.2 billion, according to Variety.
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has overtaken Avatar: The Way of Water to become the highest-grossing international release in Korean box office history in local-currency terms, Variety reported. The film's cumulative gross in Korea reached KRW139.2 billion ($101.5 million) as of Oct. 11.
The Odyssey is now the top Hollywood title ever released in Korea. Admissions stand at 12 million, equal to roughly 24% of the country's population.
The film has held the No. 1 spot in Korea for seven straight weekends, the longest streak for an international title in the market. It is also Nolan's biggest film in Korea and the biggest Universal release there, and it holds the country's Imax record, with no film released in Korea having drawn more admissions on Imax and Dolby Cinema screens.
Position on the all-time chart
On Korea's all-time chart, The Odyssey still trails two local titles. Jang Hang-jun's The King's Warden set the overall Korean box office record this year with KRW153.2 billion ($111.7 million), while Lee Byeong-heon's 2019 comedy Extreme Job sits just ahead of The Odyssey on KRW139.6 billion ($101.8 million).
According to earlier figures, The Odyssey crossed 10 million admissions in 33 days, faster than any non-franchise international title, and led Korean presales for 43 consecutive days through Sept. 14. As of Sept. 13, it had been the top international film at the Korean box office for 40 days in a row.
