Todd Haynes to Adapt Jean Genet's The Maids Next, Eyes Cate Blanchett

The filmmaker says his follow-up to De Noche will be a take on Genet's 1947 play, and he expects Cate Blanchett to appear in it.

Todd Haynes said his next film after De Noche will be an adaptation of Jean Genet's 1947 play Les Bonnes, known in English as The Maids, according to comingsoon.net. Haynes said he has finished filming De Noche.

The director said he has a particular approach to The Maids that he has not seen elsewhere. He also said he thinks Cate Blanchett will be in the film; Blanchett has performed the play on stage alongside Isabelle Huppert.

De Noche, a romantic drama, was revived in August 2025 with Pedro Pascal stepping in after Joaquin Phoenix walked away from the project days before filming was set to begin, leading to its cancellation. Danny Ramirez joined the cast at the same time.

Producer Christine Vachon credited Pascal with saving the film, speaking with Variety at the Edinburgh International Film Festival earlier this year. De Noche is reportedly eyeing a 2027 release, but no official release date has been announced.
