Tokyo Filmex Unveils 10-Film Competition, Lee Kang-sheng on Jury

The 27th edition runs Nov. 20-29 in Yurakucho, with Thailand's and Nepal's Oscar submissions among the titles; four are first features.

Tokyo Filmex has announced the 10 titles competing at its 27th edition, which runs Nov. 20-29 in Tokyo's Yurakucho district, according to Variety. Thailand's Oscar submission 9 Temples to Heaven and Nepal's Oscar submission Elephants in the Fog are among the selections.

Taiwanese actor Lee Kang-sheng will serve on the three-member international jury, with the other jurors to be named later. The jury will hand a Grand Prize worth JPY700,000 ($4,500) and a Special Jury Prize worth JPY300,000 ($1,900) to directors at a ceremony on Nov. 29.

Four of the competition titles are first features, including Sompot Chidgasornpongse's 9 Temples to Heaven, his narrative debut, and Abinash Bikram Shah's Elephants in the Fog, his debut feature. Venice supplies four titles — The Burning Giants, Big Little Things, A Bit of Light and Gu Shi — while two come from Toronto: The World Before and The Remotes.

The rest of the lineup includes Priscilla Ang's Ah Girl and a film by director Sugita Kyoshi. The competition is open to emerging Asian directors with films finished in 2025 or 2026.

Maha Harada's directing debut In My Father's Room will open the festival, and Anthony Chen's We Are All Strangers will close it.
