Atwell and Oyelowo Discuss Reworked Characters in MGM+ Treasure Island
ScreenRant spoke with Hayley Atwell and David Oyelowo about Mrs. Hawkins and Long John Silver ahead of the MGM+ adaptation's premiere.
Hayley Atwell and David Oyelowo discussed their roles in MGM+'s adaptation of Treasure Island in an interview with ScreenRant ahead of the series premiere. New episodes air Sundays at 10pm ET on MGM+.
The adaptation, from creator Robert Murphy, is not a modernized take on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel but reworks major characters. Oyelowo plays Long John Silver, reimagined as a formerly enslaved man whose relationship to the treasure is about freedom and empowerment rather than pure greed.
Atwell plays Mrs. Hawkins, who joins her son Jim on the voyage and has a much more active role than in the novel. Tom Sweet plays Jim Hawkins, and Tomer Capone plays Billy Bones.
Murphy takes liberties with Long John Silver's backstory and his relationships with Jim and Mrs. Hawkins. In Stevenson's original novel, Long John Silver and Mrs. Hawkins had no interaction, according to the interview.
