VIFF and Málaga Film Festival Launch Talent Exchange
The Institute for the Moving Image pairs VIFF Catalyst with Málaga Talent, sending a Vancouver-based filmmaker to Spain early next year.
The Vancouver International Film Festival's Institute for the Moving Image announced a partnership with Spain's Málaga Film Festival that creates an exchange between the two festivals' emerging-talent programs, VIFF Catalyst and Málaga Talent. The announcement was reported by Variety.
Diego Minor Martínez, a Mexico-born filmmaker based in Vancouver, is the first filmmaker selected from this year's Catalyst participants. He will travel to Spain to participate in Málaga Talent early next year.
In the other direction, a participant from Málaga Talent's 2027 cohort will come to Vancouver for Catalyst later that year. The exchange covers flights, accommodation and meals for the selected filmmakers.
How the two programs differ
Málaga Talent is aimed at filmmakers under 30 and is conducted in Spanish, while Catalyst has no age limit. Catalyst includes 10 sessions of roughly three hours each covering production, grants, distribution, marketing and post-production.
The relationship between the two organizations grew out of conversations with the Málaga team, including Mafiz director Annabelle Aramburu. Ana Belén Asfura attended Málaga this year as part of Mafiz, the festival's industry program.
