Episode four of VisionQuest namedrops Dr. Phineas Horton, describing him as the great-grandfather of robotics, according to Polygon. The episode also introduces Horton's first automaton AI, known as JIM or the synthetic man.
Vision explains in the episode that JIM was miraculous and flawed, and that his mind was obsolete from conception. The character is tied to a subplot in which the Butcher Bird murders founders of a company called AI Research and Development that was sold to Stark. Vision and Tommy attend a benefit where the last surviving founder speaks.
Marvel released a VisionQuest promo on Oct. 17 showing JIM as a copper-colored robot played by Paul Bettany covered in flames.
The comic-book origins of Horton's synthetic man
Timely Comics, founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman, published Marvel Comics #1 featuring Namor the Sub-Mariner and the origin of the Human Torch. In that issue, Horton unveils his synthetic man, which bursts into flames on contact with oxygen, and entombs it in cement. A small air leak later reactivated the synthetic man, who became the hero Human Torch and adopted the identity Jim Hammond.
The Human Torch was one of Timely's signature heroes in the 1940s alongside Sub-Mariner and Captain America, and Horton's creation later appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger, where a 1943 World Expo exhibit is labeled "Dr. Phineas Horton Presents: The Synthetic Man." The Human Torch stopped appearing in comics for more than a decade in the 1950s, before Marvel Comics as known today began in 1961 with the debut of the Fantastic Four.
