Weta FX Signs Taiwan Talent and AI Partnership With TAICCA
The deal, announced at Taiwan Creative Content Fest, pairs talent scouting with Weta's push to build in-house generative AI models.
Weta FX has signed a partnership with the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) at Taiwan Creative Content Fest, according to Variety, linking talent development with the studio's expanding use of generative AI.
Under the agreement, TAICCA and Taiwan's Ministry of Culture will identify young talent and introduce them to Weta FX, which may offer internships at its offices in Wellington, Melbourne and Vancouver. Weta has already worked with Taiwanese animation and VFX outfit Moonshine Studio for around six months.
Weta FX CEO Daniel Seah said clients' attitudes to generative AI have shifted sharply. In early 2025, studio legal departments told Weta that generative AI could not be used on any of their work; by the middle of 2025, several clients allowed it with pre-approval and a limited number of vendors, and around the turn of 2026 they began asking about Weta's AI strategy, mostly to learn how much the technology could save.
Seah said clients since the third quarter of 2026 have told the company that without an AI strategy it should not work with them. "Studios have moved from banning generative AI to requiring vendors to have an AI strategy," he said, in substance.
In-house models and outside tools
CTO Kimball Thurston said Weta builds its own AI models for modifying and recreating the world, and uses outside video models such as Kling AI and ByteDance's Seedance where clients permit. He also pointed to the studio's open-source project, the Rongotai Model Train Club, started about 18 months ago.
Seah said Weta FX is likely to open a representative office in London. In the past year, the company won a data center design award for the Southern Hemisphere for a waterless cooling system, Thurston said.
