Whalefall Premiere: Brolin's Heartbeat Powers Whale in Film
Director Brian Duffield says Josh Brolin's recorded heartbeat was doubled and used as the sperm whale's heartbeat in Whalefall.
Whalefall held its premiere on Tuesday at the El Capitan Theatre, where director Brian Duffield said Josh Brolin's recorded heartbeat was doubled and used as the sperm whale's heartbeat in the film, according to Variety.
Duffield said the whale's heartbeat triggers a specific lighting effect throughout the film. The creatives also gave the whale facial scarring similar to Brolin's character Mitt Gardiner as a visual tie between the two.
Brolin voices the spirit of Jay's late father, which also doubles as the spirit of the whale. Austin Abrams plays Jay.
Whalefall is one of three films featuring Brolin this year, including the third installment of the Dune franchise set to release Dec. 18. His Ridley Scott-directed The Dog Stars earned just $8 million domestically its opening weekend in August.
Brolin's 2017 film Only the Brave initially bombed at box offices but later became a streaming hit.
