Wildwood Drops 27% in Second Weekend With Estimated $9M
Laika's stop-motion film reached a 10-day domestic total of $27.4 million, and Sunday ticket sales came in above Fathom Entertainment's estimates.
Laika's Wildwood earned an estimated $9 million in its second domestic weekend, a 27% decline from its debut, according to updated figures from Fathom Entertainment. The film's 10-day domestic total stands at $27.4 million.
The second weekend included about $2.4 million on Friday and $2.7 million on Saturday. Sunday sales then rose 38% to become the film's biggest day of the weekend, beating Fathom's initial projections. That Sunday was 2% higher than the opening Sunday and was the day's second-highest total behind Clayface.
Fathom added 150 screens for the second weekend, bringing the release to 3,103 locations. PostTrak polling supplied by the distributor found that 96% of respondents rated the film excellent or very good, and 87% said they would definitely recommend it. Nearly one-third of those polled cited positive word of mouth as a reason for buying a ticket.
Wildwood, directed by Travis Knight, carries a reported $100 million production budget.
Earlier Laika second weekends
The 27% second-weekend drop is smaller than those of several earlier Laika titles. Kubo and the Two Strings fell 37.8% in its second frame, ParaNorman declined 38.7% and The Boxtrolls slipped 30.7%, according to cartoonbrew.com. Fathom and Laika have also partnered over the past decade on re-releases from the studio's catalog, including a 15th-anniversary run of Coraline in 2024.
