Wingard Says Live-Action ThunderCats Still in Development

Director Adam Wingard says a new ThunderCats draft was written earlier this year, but the film is on hold while he finishes Onslaught.

Adam Wingard says his live-action ThunderCats film is not dead and remains in development, according to an interview with Polygon. Wingard said a new draft of the screenplay was written at the beginning of this year.

Work on the film was then put on hold for Onslaught, another Wingard project. Wingard said ThunderCats is not currently his top priority.

Wingard and Warner Bros. first announced plans for a live-action ThunderCats adaptation in 2021. That same year, Wingard described it as a big-scale feature based on the animated TV series, and he worked on the project with writer Simon Barrett.

In 2021, Wingard told Deadline he wrote a 272-page ThunderCats screenplay in high school.

A separate animated ThunderCats movie was announced by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June, with few details. The last ThunderCats series, ThunderCats Roar, aired on Cartoon Network in 2020.
