AI unlocks AirPods head tracking for Linux mouse control

A Linux user turned AirPods head tracking into a software mouse after an AI worked out how to read the earbuds' motion sensor data, AppleInsider reports.

A Linux user has turned the head tracking data from Apple's AirPods into a software mouse, after an AI was used to work out how to access the motion sensor data, according to AppleInsider.

The AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro both carry built-in motion sensors that support head tracking. On Apple devices, that capability is normally reserved for Spatial Audio and Siri Interactions.

Outside Apple's ecosystem, the earbuds still work as standard Bluetooth headphones on Linux, but head tracking has not been available. The reported experiment shows the sensor data can be read on a non-Apple system once the access method is known.

The AI involved in the work was Claude, which was used to find how the motion tracking data could be reached. The result was a software mouse driven by head movement rather than a hardware accessory.

Beyond Apple's ecosystem

The demonstration concerns head tracking only and does not indicate any change to how AirPods behave on Linux by default, where they remain standard Bluetooth headphones.

Quick answers

Does AirPods head tracking work on Linux?

Head tracking is not available on Linux by default. In this case, a user accessed the motion sensor data to build a software mouse.

Which AirPods models have head tracking?

The AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro have head tracking capabilities through built-in motion sensors.

What is AirPods head tracking normally used for?

On Apple devices it is used for Spatial Audio and Siri Interactions.
