Researcher publishes 4,513 phrases iOS keyboard won't predict
Derik Kauffman used OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code to compile the list, which includes drug references and political phrases.
Researcher Derik Kauffman has published a list of 4,513 English-language phrases that iOS predictive text will never suggest and that swipe typing often refuses to recognize, according to gizmodo.com. The list appears on a website called Swipeblocked.
Kauffman compiled the list using OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code. He describes it as a "gray list" because iOS will not autocorrect those words when typed individually, but it also will not offer them as suggestions.
The entries range from profanity and drug references such as "son of a bitch," "crystal meth" and "smoking weed" to political terms including "Tibetan independence," "Kashmir dispute" and "united Ireland." According to the site, "Trayvon Martin" is the only person's full name on the list.
The list also includes entries in other languages, including Arabic and Hebrew phrases and a Chinese-language term for Taiwan independence. Some phrases, among them "make America great again" and "Covid was a hoax," do not autocomplete but do appear when entered by swiping.
Apple told Reuters that its keyboard is designed to avoid potentially inappropriate or offensive suggestions and declined to explain why particular phrases are on the list. The company said users can still type whatever they want and override predictive text suggestions.
