AI Labs Push Into Legal Work as Google, SpaceXAI Join Race
Google previewed Gemini Enterprise for Legal and SpaceXAI posted a legal solutions page, as three of four major AI labs now court law firms.
Three of the four major AI labs have now launched or pitched legal-focused AI products. Google put Gemini Enterprise for Legal into preview in late August with four major law firms, while SpaceXAI launched a dedicated legal solutions page on its website. Anthropic released what is now known as Claude Legal Solutions three months before Google's preview.
The moves mark a widening push by AI vendors into legal work, a field where accuracy is paramount and errors carry professional consequences.
A record of fabricated citations
The stakes are visible in the courts. In June, the Ontario Law Society Tribunal ordered lawyer Shahryar Mazaheri to pay $31,150 for using Grok-drafted filings with fake citations. Researcher Damien Charlotin's database has cataloged nearly 2,000 cases of AI-fabricated citations worldwide.
In April, Sullivan & Cromwell filed a letter after a bankruptcy motion contained 42 AI-generated fabrications. In Canadian courts, reported cases involving fabricated citations rose from 7 in 2024 to 86 in 2025, with 39 more in Q1 2026.
Earlier efforts have stumbled. In early 2023, DoNotPay dropped plans for an AI "robot lawyer" after state bar threats. A 2024 Stanford RegLab study found hallucination rates of 17 percent and 33 percent for LexisNexis and Westlaw legal AI platforms.
