AMD Plans FSR 4 for Handhelds, Laptops, and APUs Before 2027

AMD intends to extend FSR 4 beyond Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete GPUs, using a new custom model to reach APUs and gaming handhelds.

AMD plans to bring FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) to gaming handhelds, gaming laptops, and APUs before 2027, according to windowscentral.com. The company intends to extend the upscaling technology beyond its current support for Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete graphics cards.

Jack Huynh, AMD Senior Vice President and General Manager of Computing and Graphics, said the company intends to launch FSR 4 on new and existing APUs, gaming handhelds, and gaming laptops. AMD is using a new custom model to bring FSR 4 to a wide range of GPUs.

Existing FSR 4 support and enthusiast testing

In 2025, AMD unveiled FSR 4 for its Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete graphics cards. Earlier this year, the company teased FSR 4.1 for Radeon RX 7000 GPUs, noting that a lightweight alternative would require more time.

Enthusiasts have already run a leaked version of FSR 4 on hardware suitable only for FSR 3 and 3.5, such as APUs in gaming handhelds. At Computex this year, handhelds with Intel G3 and G3 Extreme chipsets were tested, including the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, Acer Predator Atlas 8, and OneXPlayer 3. Intel claims roughly 42% better performance than AMD's Ryzen Z2 Extreme at 35W with XeSS 3 multi-frame generation.
