Canceled AMD Ryzen 9 5900X3D Sample Surfaces with 128MB L3 Cache

An engineering sample of AMD's canceled Ryzen 9 5900X3D has appeared on Chinese Chiphell forums, showing 128MB L3 cache and 4,649 MHz clock speed.

An engineering sample of the canceled AMD Ryzen 9 5900X3D has surfaced on the Chinese Chiphell forums, according to a report by tomshardware.com. A CPU-Z screenshot of the chip shows 128MB of L3 cache and a clock speed of 4,649 MHz.

The 128MB L3 cache is achieved through 64MB of 3D V-Cache stacked on one of the chip's two Core Complex Dies (CCDs). This configuration differs from AMD's later dual-CCD X3D parts, which typically feature 3D V-Cache on only one CCD as well.

The Ryzen 9 5900X3D was never released. At Computex 2021, AMD showcased a 12-core 3D Chiplet Prototype that outperformed a regular Ryzen 9 5900X by up to 15% in average gaming performance. During a visit to AMD's labs, Gamers Nexus captured a 12-core Zen 3 chip with 192MB of L3 cache and a 16-core Zen 3 chip with a similar 192MB L3 configuration.

AMD eventually brought 3D V-Cache to 12-core and 16-core chips with Zen 4 and beyond, including the Ryzen 9 7900X3D, Ryzen 9 7950X3D, Ryzen 9 9900X3D, and Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D has been on the market for four years and remains one of the best CPUs for gaming on the AM4 platform.
