Apple Adds 2017 12-inch MacBook, iPad 6th Gen, BeatsX to Obsolete List
All 12-inch MacBook models are now classified as obsolete, with Apple in principle no longer offering official hardware repair.
Apple has added the 2017 12-inch MacBook, the iPad 6th generation and the BeatsX earphones to its obsolete product list, according to the Korean tech outlet digitaltoday.co.kr. With the 2017 model moved to the list, every model of the 12-inch MacBook is now classified as an obsolete product.
The iPad 6th generation entries cover both the Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi + Cellular versions. The BeatsX models placed on the list come in several colors, including Beats Red, Defiant Black-Red, Deep Black, Pure White and Sky Blue.
What the obsolete classification means
Apple sorts products by how long they have been off the market. Products are classified as vintage 5 to 7 years after sales end, when repairs are still possible but parts supply depends on availability. At 7 or more years after sales end they become obsolete, and Apple in principle does not provide official hardware repair.
Apple had already placed the 2015 and 2016 models of the 12-inch MacBook on the same obsolete list. The company emphasized portability and design with the 12-inch MacBook, though it did not sell as well as expected and still drew interest from users who prefer light, compact machines.
