ArtCraft adds free WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft to take on Microsoft Office
The open-source suite now includes a word processor, a spreadsheet app with over 500 functions and pivot tables, and a presentation tool with animations and presenter view.
ArtCraft has added three free open-source apps — WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft — aimed at replacing Word, Excel and PowerPoint, according to howtogeek.com. The additions extend the project from its earlier focus on Adobe-style tools into Microsoft Office territory.
GridCraft ships with more than 500 functions and pivot tables, while DeckCraft includes animations, transitions and a presenter view. WordCraft is the suite's word processor. Like the rest of the ArtCraft line-up, all three are released as open source at no cost.
The new apps join the existing ArtCraft photo editor, PhotoCraft, which is written in Rust and supports layers, brushes, masks and PSD files. ArtCraft has positioned its tools as alternatives to Adobe applications including Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere Pro.
Developer Brandon Thomas is credited with building the ArtCraft apps, partly using AI.
Older open-source efforts
Free open-source alternatives to paid software such as GIMP and OpenOffice have existed for years. ArtCraft previously drew attention for recreating a large portion of Adobe's app suite, including alternatives to Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign and Acrobat Pro.
