Developer launches Retro486 browser PC emulator at version 0.1

Jan de Jager's e486-web project emulates an Intel 80486DX2-66 PC in pure JavaScript, with FreeDOS, Doom and Wolfenstein 3D bundled on its disks.

Developer Jan de Jager has published the e486-web emulator, a full Intel 486 PC emulated inside a browser, on the project's GitHub page. Titled the Retro486 Modular Browser PC, it is currently at version 0.1, according to Tom's Hardware.

The emulator is written in 100% pure JavaScript with no dependencies. A live demo boots with a single click and emulates an Intel 80486DX2-66 system. Claude receives a development credit on the project.

The interface is split into tabs for a CRT monitor, Motherboard & Slots, Storage Bay, Custom Card Studio, and System & Diagnostics. The CRT display offers color, scanlines, green phosphor, amber and paperwhite modes, while the default configuration ships with a VLB graphics card, a Sound Blaster 16 ISA card, a multi-I/O controller and a network card.

The bundled disk library includes FreeDOS, Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. Settings persist between browser sessions, and ROMs, floppy images and uploaded .img/.iso files are cached automatically. The System & Diagnostics tab allows switching CPU models and inspecting CPU registers, RAM, VRAM, storage, BIOS and boot sectors.

De Jager noted that most files on the e486-web GitHub repository were uploaded or updated about a week before publication, with some two days old. He also recalled playing Syndicate in the 1990s on an actual 486DX2 system and on an Amiga.
