AWS launches TorchNeuron to run PyTorch AI apps on Trainium chips
Amazon says the tool needs one line of configuration and no code rewrite, and that it is pushing code upstream to PyTorch to loosen chip ties.
Amazon Web Services released a tool called TorchNeuron on October 19, 2026 that lets AI applications written with PyTorch run on Amazon's Trainium chips after changing a single line of configuration, according to TechCrunch. The company says the tool requires no code rewrite and that developers familiar with PyTorch can use it directly.
AWS also said it is contributing code upstream to the main PyTorch project to remove code that ties the framework to specific chips. The company claims about 85% of AI applications are written with PyTorch.
According to AWS, Trainium handles both training and inference on one chip and is integrated with its cloud infrastructure. Colin Brace is VP of Technology Software at AWS Annapurna Labs.
Loosening ties to a single chip
PyTorch has been part of the Linux Foundation since 2022, which maintains open-source projects, and Facebook originally developed it. Nvidia has spent years ensuring its CUDA software supports AI apps written with PyTorch.
