Axiom Engineers Use GPT-6 Astra to Drive Toyota Corolla to Drive-Thru
Three Axiom engineers connected OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra to a 2024 Toyota Corolla, which navigated to an In-N-Out Burger take-out window with a safety driver present.
Three AI engineers at the startup Axiom connected OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra to a 2024 Toyota Corolla to drive it to an In-N-Out Burger drive-thru, according to Wired. The engineers linked a chat interface to a server connected to windscreen-mounted cameras and the car's power steering system, with a safety driver present.
The AI model navigated the vehicle to the take-out window without prior coaching, the report said. The project was done by Aditya Ramabadran, Simon Mahns, and Tobias Gessler outside of their work at Axiom.
The engineers first tested SpaceXAI's Grok before trying models from OpenAI and Anthropic. The latter initially refused motion commands but were coaxed with prompting, according to Wired.
Separately, Elorian AI and Scale AI developed a benchmark called Humanity's Sixth Sense to measure models' physical scene understanding. Andrew Dai, CEO of Elorian AI, previously worked as a researcher at Google DeepMind.
