BT Signs Rescue Deal to Acquire TalkTalk and PlatformX

BT's acquisition of TalkTalk and wholesale arm PlatformX Communications needs CMA approval, with a possible UK government public interest review.

BT has signed a rescue deal to acquire UK broadband operator TalkTalk and its wholesale arm, PlatformX Communications, according to TechRadar. The deal is subject to approval from the UK Competition and Markets Authority.

BT estimated the total cash impact of the deal in its FY27 at around £400 million. The company said TalkTalk customers will see no changes to their services or bills until the deal closes.

The UK government's Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport issued a press release alongside BT's announcement. The government is using Enterprise Act powers that allow Secretary of State Lisa Nandy to consider wider public interest issues after the CMA's ruling. The CMA has been told to file its report by October 19, 2026.

TalkTalk is the UK's fourth-largest broadband company, with 1.5 million retail customers and one million wholesale customers. It employs around 900 people in the UK and reported roughly £1.2bn in revenue over the last 12 months, but remained loss-making, according to BT. The company had been on the edge of potential administration due to rising debts.
