Canva launches Canva Craft, its first in-house AI image model
Canva Craft plans a design before generating an image and can output up to 2K resolution across more than 30 aspect ratios.
Canva launched Canva Craft, its first in-house AI image generation model, on October 22, making it available globally to all users through Dream Lab in the platform's left-hand menu, according to The Verge.
The model uses a two-stage architecture that plans a design before generating an image. It can produce images at up to 2K resolution and in more than 30 aspect ratios, giving users a wider range of output shapes than a fixed-format generator offers.
Canva says Canva Craft was trained on millions of human-made templates from the company's own content library. On Design Arena's leaderboard for AI image generation models, it currently ranks fourth, behind three OpenAI models: GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst in first, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare in second and GPT-Image-2 in third.
Agent access and faster variants planned
Canva plans to let AI agents connect to Canva Craft through the open Model Context Protocol, a standard that allows outside tools to call the model. The company also says it will release two faster versions, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, in the future.
The launch follows Canva's April release of prompt-based editing, which let users create or change designs by describing them. Earlier, Canva added layers to AI-generated images so that one part of an image could be changed while the rest stayed untouched.
