CNET Tests Knockoff Extension That Hides Fake Amazon Brands
CNET's hands-on review finds Knockoff grays out or hides fake brands on Amazon, with support for Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, and Safari.
CNET has published a hands-on test of Knockoff, a free browser extension that grays out or hides fake brands on Amazon product listings. The review evaluated how the tool performs while shopping the marketplace.
Knockoff is available for Firefox, Chrome, and Chromium-based browsers including Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave, as well as a Safari extension. It runs locally, requires no account, and sends no data to company servers, according to the review. The extension is free and open-source, with its source code on GitHub.
Developer Josh Pigford launched Knockoff in early July. It has since been downloaded over 100,000 times, according to CNET. The extension also includes a system for reporting brands that are incorrectly labeled as legitimate or fake.
Background
Amazon is currently hosting its Prime Big Deal Days shopping event, CNET noted. A few days before Knockoff's launch, Pigford posted on X about building a Chrome extension that dims or hides mass-produced fake brands on Amazon; the post garnered 22,000 likes. In an interview with 404 Media in July, Pigford said Knockoff is built on prior extensions AmazonBrandFilter and Amazon Brand Detector. Since launch, Pigford has released multiple updates.
