Cody Wilson Unveils WASP, Claimed First AI-Generated Gun

Wilson says the 3D-printed .22 caliber handgun was designed through dialogue with his custom AI model, GatGPT, then test-fired in Austin, Texas.

Cody Wilson unveiled and test-fired a 3D-printed handgun called the WASP on October 16, 2026, claiming it is the first gun designed by an artificial intelligence model. According to The Verge, Wilson said the design was generated through natural-language dialogue with his custom AI model, GatGPT.

The WASP is a .22 caliber single-shot handgun that fires real rounds and carries no serial number. Wilson test-fired it outside Defense Distributed headquarters in Austin, Texas. The first attempt misfired, and two of three shots fired successfully.

Wilson describes GatGPT as an AI that can generate gun designs, trained on the library of gun files hosted on DEFCAD. He leads Defense Distributed, the Austin-based organization behind the project.

Thirteen years after the Liberator

Thirteen years ago, Wilson made the first 3D-printed firearm, helping usher in an era of untraceable ghost guns. That earlier single-shot design was called the Liberator.

Launched in 2012, DEFCAD is described as the world's largest online repository of digital gun and component files. For over a decade, court cases have argued whether gun code is protected speech, often citing or involving Wilson.
