DNA Lounge Says AI Scrapers Lifted Its Hosting Bill to $3,500

San Francisco venue DNA Lounge says AI scrapers drove its hosting costs from $600–800 to $3,500 a month, a jump it says costs $32,000 a year.

DNA Lounge, a San Francisco nightclub and venue, published a blog post on 6 October 2026 accusing AI scrapers of relentless attacks on its website, which it said have pushed its web hosting bill several times over, according to gigazine.net.

Jamie Zawinski, the noted computer programmer who runs the venue, said the monthly hosting bill has jumped from $600–800 to $3,500. He said that leaves him paying $2,700 per month, or $32,000 per year, for hosting.

In the post, Zawinski wrote that the AI companies are the worst parasites society has produced. He also criticised people working at AI companies and users of AI tools.

Zawinski cited an event at the venue that brought in over $40,000 in ticket sales but used AI to produce flyers and printed banners instead of paying a local artist $200.

Pressure on site operators

The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, has previously said that AI scraping burdens its infrastructure. Cloudflare has announced Cloudflare Monetization Gateway, a system that uses the x402 payment protocol to charge AI agents and software accessing protected web pages and datasets.
