E Ink Unveils Kaleido 4 Color E-Paper With Wider Gamut
E Ink says Kaleido 4 doubles color gamut volume to over 40K and supports video at up to 18 fps. Hanvon's M10C II is the only device slated to use it.
E Ink has announced Kaleido 4, a new color e-paper display for e-readers, according to Gizmodo. The company says the panel doubles the color gamut volume of its predecessor to more than 40K, raises white reflectance by 15 percent and lifts contrast by 50 percent.
E Ink also says Kaleido 4 supports video playback at up to 18 fps, a capability the previous generation lacked.
The only device currently slated to use Kaleido 4 is Hanvon Technology's M10C II, according to the announcement. Hanvon Vice President Wang Jie is tied to the product.
An upgrade over the previous generation
The prior Kaleido generation powers devices including the Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour and Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. Those panels drew criticism from reviewers; Gizmodo's Kyle Barr described the previous generation as "notoriously dim" in a review of the Boox Note Air5 C, saying it was usable only at 100 percent brightness, while other reviews reported darker backgrounds and washed-out colors.
