Microsoft lets Excel users name a table in the Create Table dialog

A new name field appears alongside the range and header checkbox, with names limited to 255 characters and no spaces.

Microsoft has added a table name field to Excel's Create Table dialog, so a table can be named at the moment it is created, according to howtogeek.com.

The option is reached through Insert > Table. In the Create Table dialog, users confirm the range, tick the header checkbox and type a name in the new field.

Excel applies several rules to table names: each name must begin with a letter, an underscore or a backslash, cannot contain spaces, must be unique within the workbook and cannot match a cell reference such as BIN9 or R1C1. Names can be up to 255 characters long.

Keyboard users can reach the field with Ctrl+T followed by Tab, and toggle the headers checkbox with the Space bar.

Microsoft is rolling the feature out gradually, so availability varies by Excel version.

Previously a two-step task

Before this change, naming a table meant creating it first and then renaming it in the Table Design tab, a workflow that had been in place for years. Microsoft has also spent a long time pushing Copilot updates into Excel.
