Top AI forward-deployed engineers earn up to $1.45 million a year
A Christian & Timbers survey of about 550 engineers and executives found stock and bonuses make up 52-66% of top-tier FDE pay.
Top-tier AI forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) in the US earn total annual compensation of $586,000 to $1.45 million, according to a survey by headhunting firm Christian & Timbers reported by aitimes.com. The firm surveyed about 550 engineers and executives over the past six months.
Stock awards and bonuses accounted for 52-66% of that total. Christian & Timbers estimated there are about 17,000 FDEs in the US, of whom only about 2,000 qualify as top-tier, and that roughly 80% of those top-tier engineers work or have worked at Palantir.
Pay at other levels is more modest: FDE Jobs reported a median base salary of $174,000 across 106 US FDE job postings.
Demand is spreading beyond technology companies. Target, Barclays, Bausch + Lomb and American Express have recently begun hiring FDEs, and Google and Accenture agreed to jointly train up to 1,000 of them.
Christian & Timbers founder Jeff Christian said demand for FDEs is expected to last at least until 2028.
Firms build in-house teams
In the past, FDEs from companies such as Palantir and OpenAI or from consultancies were typically dispatched to client companies; companies are now building their own FDE organizations. OpenAI and Anthropic operate separate AI deployment organizations, and Microsoft and Amazon are expanding related programs.
