Hackers Raise Fridge Temperatures in French Supermarkets

Unknown attackers remotely increased thermostat settings, causing food spoilage and fires; Paris prosecutors call the breach large-scale.

Unknown hackers breached hundreds of supermarkets across France and remotely raised thermostats on fridges and freezers up to 50 degrees Celsius, causing food spoilage and fires. Paris prosecutors described the attack as large-scale, according to gizmodo.com.

France's National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) is investigating and found signs the attack originated with a vulnerability at Danfoss. Danfoss said it is aware of incidents in France affecting a limited number of refrigeration management systems.

Confirmed targets include Les Mousquetaires (150 stores), Carrefour (80 stores), Monoprix (around 25 of its 490 French stores) and Cooperative U. Intermarche CEO Thierry Cotillard said losses were likely in the tens of millions of euros.

Sekoia analyst Felix Aime said organizations in Spain, Portugal, Poland, Germany and Belgium appeared to be hit.
