Android Authority has activated a set of new features in the Gemini overlay inside version 17.62.9 of the Google app. The changes introduce a Chat/Task selector that splits the overlay's input into two modes: Chat, which shows the familiar "Ask Gemini" prompt, and Task, which changes the text box to "Describe a task."
Flanking the selector are two new icons: a bell for recent chats and a Proactive Assistance icon. Tapping the bell opens a bottom sheet listing recent Gemini conversations, giving users a quicker way back into ongoing threads.
Separately, a Browser page has appeared in Gemini settings. It offers radio buttons for "Chrome on my devices" and "Remote browser," and controls how Gemini Spark operates in the background.
Earlier signs of the overlay push
The new controls build on features Android Authority has been tracking. In June, the outlet found an Agent Dashboard button inside the Gemini overlay's plus menu for recent chats. Earlier in September 2026, Android Authority reported that Google may bring Gemini Spark to the overlay.
