Google Assistant Deprecation Hits Android as Gemini Takes Over

Google Assistant is being replaced by Gemini on Android mobile devices, and the migration now appears fully underway based on user reports. The deprecation began at the start of September.
Google originally set the deprecation for 2025 and later extended it to 2026, announcing the final timeline in early August. According to 9to5google.com, Assistant is gone on all devices and accounts checked in the US and Europe.
The Gemini app has removed the Switch to Google Assistant setting, and the shortcut no longer appears at the bottom of the account menu with Google app 17.60 stable and 17.62 beta. Users can no longer switch back to Google Assistant on phones, tablets, or paired devices, which include Wear OS, headphones, and Android Auto.
Gemini is now the voice assistant experience on Android when long-pressing the power button or swiping from the corners.
There are no changes to Assistant yet on Google Nest and Google Home smart speakers and displays.
