The main change is how they are invoked. Skills can be called up with a / command from the main prompt box, rather than being launched through the Gem manager.
Google says skills will gain feature parity with Gems over the coming weeks. That includes sharing skills via links and adding Google Drive files or notebooks for context.
Gems will be migrated to skills automatically, so users do not need to rebuild them by hand. Over the weekend, it was spotted that Gemini is replacing Gems with skills.
Timelines differ by account type. Personal Google Accounts will lose access to Gems starting in November, while the migration will happen for Google Workspace business, enterprise, and non-profit customers in March 2027. Education users have until June 2027 to migrate.
