Google fixes Home Speaker bug that repeatedly downloaded update

Google says a server misconfiguration caused some Home Speakers to re-download a software update, with one user reporting about 3 terabytes of Wi-Fi use.

Google confirmed on October 22, 2026, that a server misconfiguration caused some Google Home Speakers to repeatedly download a software update, consuming large amounts of Wi-Fi data, and said the issue has been resolved.

A Google spokesperson said the bug affected only some devices and that a fix has been rolled out.

The problem came to light through user reports. According to accounts from Reddit users reported by 9to5Google, one person discovered roughly 3 terabytes of data usage attributed to the Google Home Speaker over roughly two weeks, spotted during a check of their home Wi-Fi.

A WIRED author also reported that their own Google Home Speaker used 487 GB in the last ten days, almost as much as the rest of the home used between August and September, according to the outlet. The speakers run on Google's Gemini AI.
