Korean Retailers Mark Hangeul Day Centennial With Products, Fonts, Events

Lotte Wellfood, GS25, BGF Retail and others rolled out limited editions, free fonts and pop-ups for the 100th anniversary of Hangeul Day.

Several South Korean retail companies have launched products, typefaces and events to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangeul Day, according to ZDNet Korea. The announcements and openings were tied to the October 9 commemoration.

Lotte Wellfood released an "ABC Hangeul Limited Edition" in collaboration with the National Hangeul Museum. Convenience store chain GS25 released the "GS Hyejaro-un" font for free on Hangeul Day, while BGF Retail, which operates CU, developed its official font "SD CU Good Friend" together with type foundry Sandoll.

Elsewhere in retail, SPAO launched an "Insomnia Reading Club" collection in partnership with Kyobo Book Centre. Ediya Coffee is running a "Korean Naming Contest" event from October 9 to 15, and Lotteria is operating a "Matkkalria" pop-up at three locations, including Hongdae, until October 11.

Cultural and duty-free offerings are also part of the lineup: Shinsegae Duty Free is presenting the media art piece "Annyeong in Hanji" by artist Hong In-suk, and an AI exhibition assistance service, "nodnod.io," is being operated in collaboration with Docson.
