Honor has launched the Life S3, a compact e-ink ebook reader that attaches magnetically to the back of a phone. It is available in China for CNY 360, equivalent to about $54 / £40 / €47 / ₹5,150.
The Life S3 has a 3.68-inch e-ink display with 259ppi pixel density. The panel has no front light, and page turning is handled through the touchscreen. A function key sits on the left, with the power key on the right.
The reader measures 5.6mm thick and weighs 61g. It packs a 650mAh battery rated for up to 30 hours of continuous reading, charges over USB-C and transfers books over Wi-Fi 6 using the Honor Smart Space app. Supported formats include EPUB, MOBI, TXT, DOC, DOCX and PDF, and a microSD slot accepts cards up to 1TB. The retail package includes a magnetic ring, screen protector and charging cable.
Magnetic add-on displays gain traction
Add-on displays that magnetically attach to the back of phones have recently become a trend, normally used as camera preview displays. Tiny ebook readers have also grown in popularity, with devices such as the Xteink X4 Pro, which has a 4.3-inch display and does not fit well on some smaller phones. Xteink also offers the 3.7-inch X3 model, which is comparable to the S3.
